World Mental Health Awareness Week 2023

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st May 2023 and the theme this year, as set by the Mental Health Foundation is based around anxiety, how it can affect daily living and what we can do to support our peers.

World Mental Health Awareness Week 2023

Anxiety is a normal emotion in us all, but sometimes it can get out of control and become a mental health problem and is one of the most common mental health problems we can face.

Lots of things can lead to the feeling of anxiety, which becomes an issue when it starts getting in the way of how we live. When it creates a level of stress and hopelessness that affects overall mental health and wellbeing.

Some symptoms of anxiety include difficulty sleeping, feeling sick, restlessness and panic attacks. There may also be behavioural changes such as avoiding friends and family or situations that trigger stress. However, these effects can be made more manageable.

In a recent mental health survey around stress, anxiety and hopelessness over personal finances conducted by the Mental Health Foundation, found that:

“A quarter of adults said they felt so anxious that it stopped them from doing the things they want to do some or all of the time. Six in ten adults feel this way, at least some of the time.”

Focusing on anxiety for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week will increase people’s awareness and understanding of anxiety by providing information on the things that can help prevent it from becoming a problem.

Established 27 years ago, Mental Health Awareness Week happens every year, and it’s the biggest opportunity for the whole of the UK to come together to focus on getting good mental health. The week aims to tackle stigma and help people understand and prioritise their and others’ mental health.
